When
Candice Lake's
boyfriend proposed to her at Christmas on Palm Beach,
just north of Sydney, she threw him in the sea. She's a big girl, so she
can do things like that to a guy. "Is that a no?" he asked plaintively. No,
it was a yes.
Alberta Ferretti has offered to make the wedding dress. But
that's not why Lake was on Ferretti's catwalk last night. Rather, she was
one of the glamorous bloggers who'd been picked to send a message with
Ferretti's "demi-couture." At the post-show dinner at Bistrot Giacomo,
Ferretti was playing humble. "I couldn't pretend to do alta moda [haute couture]," she said, "but I feel confident to meet it
halfway."

Hence, demi-couture. And that's why she was looking for
new personalities: "a new communication," she called it. Her new
communicators were conga-ing noisily through the restaurant at one point,
but you can get away with that kind of thing when you're New Jazz Age
babies. What was more impressive was the silver-foxiness of the alto
Milanese on a Friday night out. They're so damn good-looking—and good
at being with their friends—that it's enough to make a wound-up-tight
Anglo-Saxon feel bereft.

Stella McCartney doesn't do anything small. Her new Greene Street store, for example. At over 5,200 square feet and two floors, it positively dwarfs her now closed Meatpacking District boutique. And then there was the dinner she hosted to celebrate its opening last night, with a guest list that included Naomi Watts, Kristen Wiig, and Liv Tyler, and an equally A-list roster of art stars, Cindy Sherman and Marilyn Minter among them.

A pair of giant ice sculptures of the Empire State and Chrysler buildings stood at each end of the long table. Below them was a moat straight out of a Tokyo sushi bar, upon which floated appetizers accompanied by notes that read "grab me," "have me," and "Fred Armisen." The comedian and his fellow SNL funnyman Jason Sudeikis were having a laugh with the place cards.

Midway through the Mario Batali meal, art dealer Tony Shafrazi toasted Stella and the new store, informing the crowd that in a former life, the Soho location was a famous gallery: 112 Greene Street. "It was a legendary space all the way through the seventies and early eighties," he said. To which McCartney replied, "I would like to apologize for taking something so rich and making it into a shop for shoes and handbags." Earlier, though, she admitted, "It really is incredible for a London girl like me to be in Soho. It sounds cheesy, but it's a dream."
