Gaia Repossi, poster child for the newest generation of the Place Vendôme-based French jewelry company, made some major inroads in New York this season. A few weeks ago, her own collaborations with Alexander Wang and Joseph Altuzarra debuted on the designers’ respective runways. To celebrate, she decided to host a dinner last night for her NYC-based friends at the quintessentially Parisian brasserie Café de Flore. Joining her were all sorts of transatlantic guests, including Leigh Lezark, Dree Hemingway, Jessica Stam, and three Traina sisters.

Repossi, ensconced in a corner for most of the evening, contrasted the working styles of two of New York’s favorite new faces. “With Joseph [Altuzarra] it was very easy. We discussed what we wanted back in September, and gradually it happened until his show,” she explained. “But Alex [Wang] was much more fast-paced. Up until three days before the show, we were still discussing the motif and the feel of the show. We tried Skype-ing, but that didn’t work so well.” Perhaps not, but her burnt-gold cuffs were still standouts on his runway.

With everyone at their seats and jewelry talk wrapped up, the conversation moved on to the very late-arriving dinner courses. The invite said 8 p.m., but the first course didn’t hit the tables till nearly 11 p.m. Erin Wasson was jealously eyeing the cut-up croque monsieur that was given to Asia Zahm, Olivier Zahm’s daughter. “You know, that’s all you need: cheese and carbs,” Wasson concluded. “That will get you through fashion week.” Perhaps a hunger tizzy was to blame, but before the end of the night there was a full-on flower fight, using the centerpieces as ammunition, between tables—Trish Goff, Wasson, and Lindsay Lohan on one side, and Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld, Giovanna Battaglia, and the Traina sisters on the other. “This is not very French,” Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, who remained neutral in the floral fray, explained. “But I’m sure they’re amused.”

The Champagne is flowing, the stylists are overbooked, and everyone’s feathers are in a ruffle—it’s Oscars week in Hollywood. “I think some people should sweat it a lot more and some people a lot less,” Paul Haggis mused last night at a cocktail party for Artists for Peace and Justice, his charity dedicated to relief for Haiti. “No, that’s a lie,” he added. “No one should sweat it more.” With support from co-sponsors Brioni and Vanity Fair, the Crash director was trying to help a starry crowd (including Diane Lane, Kristen Bell, and Jon Hamm) at the Beverly Hills Hotel put their minds elsewhere, if only for a conscientious moment. “I forget it’s awards season,” said Maria Bello, who’s visited the devastated country twice since the earthquake. “Haiti’s the most important thing going on in the world right now.”

Having recently done his part, in the form of a $250,000 sponsorship of a Haitian school, Gerard Butler was mentally preparing himself for “a lot of events, a lot of awards ceremonies, a lot of fittings.” He’d noticed a shift in the movie crowd’s mood this week, he added. “There’s anticipation and dread.”

Butler, who’s not in the running, is almost certainly feeling less of that than James Cameron is, but the Avatar director pushed his Oscar anxieties aside to promote alternative energy later that evening at a Global Green USA fundraiser. “I’ve been clamoring about this for a while,” he said on the carpet, then headed upstairs into Avalon, where he held court in an alcove directly across from one occupied by Jessica Alba. The actress made an early exit—”I’m not so cool, I’m old, I have a kid,” she explained, smiling—but Cameron stayed on past midnight to chat with friends and fans. Talk about wind power.

Jefferson Hack is a traditionalist at heart. The leader of the indie publishing pack likes the idea of setting one night aside during the Milan shows when all the fashion tribes can congregate under the aegis of his Another Magazine to unwind over dinner and drinks. Better still, the location is the classic Le Langhe on Corso Como, where the food is never going to distract from the social intercourse. Saturday night’s get-together was a case in point. Margherita Missoni fessed up to Michael Roberts about her nerves on the eve of the launch of her first full accessories collection for her family business. After owning up to his profound love of horror movies (but his reluctance to see Paranormal Activity), Raf Simons told Suzy Menkes about a frightening mid-sea experience he had while on holiday in Puglia last year. Of course, fear can be a man’s best friend at such an insider-y fashion function, which is maybe why those steeling themselves with a cigarette in the street outside included Carsten Höller, Olivier Zahm, PR maven Gillian McVey, and the host himself.

Hey There, Young Fellows

The weather outside was pure Northeast, but inside the Frick Collection last night, we were in Morocco—OK, El Morocco, to be precise. To mark its 75th anniversary, the uptown museum’s Young Fellows invited about 600 bright young things to party like it was 1935 amid a backdrop meant to evoke New York nightclubs of yore. There were classic hors d’oeuvres (shrimp cocktails, deviled quail eggs), Lucite-topped bars, and planters of orchids and palm leaves. No swing dancing here, though: “This is the Young Fellows, not the old fellows,” explained Caitlin Davis, as some of her fellow committee members tested their Vera Wang gowns with some twenty-first-century bumping and bending in the Music Room next door. (Wang, who co-sponsored with Tiffany & Co., was reportedly still in Vancouver.) Billed as the Diamond Deco Ball, this soirée was scattered with rocks, turbans, and bias-cut dresses—not to mention guests who weren’t going to let a little blizzard get in the way of their important social duties. Said Lauren Remington Platt, who’d been at two parties before this one: “What weather? I’m going around with my boots and a plastic bag.” Jewelry designer Lisa Salzer, meanwhile, had arrived in a stretch limo. “It was all the car service had left,” she said. “But it feels like prom!”
