Earlier this week, Bill Simmons (aka “The Sports Guy”) penned an online column, which argued the following thesis:
The eventual comeback by Tiger Woods on the golf course will be more difficult than the in-ring return of Muhammad Ali, following his hiatus from boxing that stemmed from avoiding the Vietnam War draft.
It’s a controversial stance, one meant to elicit opinions and one defended by nine well-reasoned points.
So, how did MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann react? By immaturely taking to his blog and writing:
If the writer can let me know when Woods is punitively drafted by the military even though he is about eight years older than almost all the other draftees, I’ll begin to take him seriously. In the interim I am again left to marvel how somebody can rise to a fairly prominent media position with no discernible insight or talent, save for an apparent ability to mix up a vast bowl of word salad very quickly.
Simmons then Tweeted in response: KO, please know the feeling is mutual. You’re my worst case scenario for my career in 12 yrs: a pious, unlikable blowhard who lives alone.
We love any war of words between two outspoken individuals, but must side with Simmons in this case.
First, Mr. Olbermann, as long-time readers of The Sports Guy, we can tell you how he rose to his position as the top columnist at ESPN.com:
By earning a Master’s in Journalism from Boston University; slogging away for years as a bartender while creating/building his own website; and being discovered by ESPN after he earned a loyal online following.
Some journalists may look down on Simmons because he represents the age of new media, in which a writer can thrive on the Internet without ever speaking to an athlete or going inside a locker room for his columns. But such a niche still requires wit, knowledge and hard work.
The guy recently wrote a 700-page book on the history of basketball that was number-one on The New York Times Bestsellers List.
Moreover, Olbermann has risen to his level of notoriety due to a similar recent phenomenon: the opinionated, 24/7 news cycle.
Finally, go ahead and disagree with Simmons’ take on Woods vs. Ali. But do it in a respectful manner. A few days ago, Simmons took part in a Podcast with fellow ESPN columnist Rick Reilly because the pair has contrasting opinions on the Tiger Woods press conference.
Simmons isn’t afraid to mix it up – professionally, respectfully – with those that don’t share his points of view. But Olbermann was clearly using this Woods’ column as an excuse to bitterly rail against The Sports Guy’s overall success. That’s just petty.

No longer having to hide their lightning hot passion, The Bachelor stars Jake Pavelka and Vienna Girardi stepped out for dinner twice this week in Hollywood.
The somewhat embattled couple put on a united front – in front of the paparazzi at celebrity hot spots, natch – at Koi on Wednesday and The Palm last night.
Vienna Girardi and Jake Pavelka smiled and greeted photographers as they left last night, enjoying a nice dinner following their visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Asked to comment on his alleged ex’s claims that he cheated on Vienna and discussed marriage with her, Pavelka shrugged his shoulders, shaking his head.
“Nah,” he replied. Bold, Jake. Bold.

Although Pavelka’s so-called ex has given interviews on the subject anonymously, reports suggest that the woman in question is 24-year-old Tanya Douglas.
She says Jake promised her he’d come back for her, and the women on The Bachelor meant nothing to him. He says they dated but there was no overlap.
If the vicious rumors are hurting Vienna and Jake, you wouldn’t know it.
Walking hand-in-hand and sporting ear-to-ear grins on both occasions this week, the newly engaged duo certainly look like they may just go the distance.
Well, maybe. This is The Bachelor. If not for Molly Malaney and Jason Mesnick getting married last weekend, the show would be 0-fer. So, we ask you …

Vanity Fair has a terrific feature on the David Letterman scandal this month, taking us inside his affair and the alleged extortion plot against him like never before.
Even before 48 Hours producer Joe Halderman caught Letterman kissing his girlfriend, Late Show staffer Stephanie Birkitt, he and Dave were on a collision course.
The converging emotional sides of the slow-moving, but explosive triangle – Birkitt’s ambition, Halderman’s bitterness, and Letterman’s self-loathing – rocked CBS.

His name is Robert Joel Halderman. At 51, he is a producer for CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery, a battle-scarred newsman who has spent much of his life in war zones.

Last night on The Bachelor, Jake Pavelka chose Vienna Girardi to be his wife. Or at least fiancee for the next 6-8 weeks ’til the “lightning hot” chemistry wears off.
We’re just kidding. Mostly. While his pick shocked and appalled many viewers, Jake is clearly on cloud nine. We wish them the best and hope they beat the odds.
As far as this “Maverick” Bachelor is concerned, Vienna’s haters can kiss off. While they cried tears of sadness last night, Jake and Vienna only shed tears of joy.

On Rock of Love, Bret Michaels had more sex with desperate groupies than Heidi Montag has had plastic surgery procedures.
As a result, it shouldn’t be hard to grasp the controversy surrounding the rocker’s duet with 17-year old Miley Cyrus, especially when the lyrics on “Nothing to Lose” include:
We both know better than this/Still we can’t resist/Slowly get undressed/Won’t you fall down on me/So close I can feel you breathe.
Still, when asked about the scandalous song, Michaels told Us Weekly “it’s blown out of proportion.” He elaborated, explaining how the duet came about:
“[Miley's] like, ‘This is an incredible song, it’s beautiful. Maybe I could [add] some stuff to it, some harmonies,’” Bret said. “She was excited that she didn’t have to follow any rules.”
As for telling a girl that’s not yet old enough to vote to “slowly get undressed?”
“I never sat down and said, ‘Look at the content. Look at the lyrical content,’” Michaels said. “The part where it says she slowly gets undressed, Miley says, ‘Yeah she does.’ It has no reference to her and I. It’s not even a duet.”
In conclusion, the long-haired reality star makes no apologies:
“As God is my witness, there is nothing I have to be defensive about. I’m a good dad. I just thought it was a beautiful song.”
It’s not bad. We just hope Miley showered multiple times the day they recorded it together.
